  • Mineralogy & Crystallography Polychrome Jasper

Polychrome Jasper was discovered in 2006. Jaspers are formed when fine particulate materials become compacted by silica and cemented into a solid mass. Polychrome jasper is also frequently called desert jasper or royal savannah jasper. A jasper's distinct pattern is determined by the flow and deposition of volcanic ash or silica sediments. The name means "spotted or speckled stone" and is an opaque, impure variety of silica, usually red, yellow, brown, or green in colour and rarely blue. The red color is due to iron inclusions.

  • Mineralogy & Crystallography Crazy Lace Agate

Crazy Lace Agate, like other Chalcedony varieties, lacks a well-defined crystal structure due to its microcrystalline nature. However, it is generally classified as belonging to the trigonal crystal system. Crazy Lace Agate ranks between 6 and 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. This means it can scratch many materials like glass and steel but is susceptible to scratches from harder materials like diamonds and corundum. Due to its microcrystalline structure, Crazy Lace Agate lacks distinct cleavage planes. This means it tends to break in a conchoidal manner, meaning with a smooth, curved fracture. Crazy Lace Agate typically forms as botryoidal or massive aggregates within cavities and vesicles in volcanic rocks.
