Obsdian is classified as Amorphous because it has no orderly internal atomic structure and no naturally occurring shape,due to its formation from the parent which is a Volcano. Obsidian is produced from felsic lava, rich in the lighter elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, and potassium. It is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows. These flows have a high content of silica, giving them a high viscosity. The high viscosity inhibits diffusion of atoms through the lava, which inhibits the first step (nucleation) in the formation of mineral crystals. Together with rapid cooling, this results in a natural glass forming from the lava.
John Dee was a 15th-century scientist who, after a career of furthering academic thought and advising Queen Elisabeth the 1st, turned to the heavens in search of esoteric wisdom. With the assistance of a scryer named Edward Kelley, Dee created a ‘Holy Table’ anchored by hermetic sigils, upon which this mirror acted as a portal to commune with other worlds.
