Ammonites were predatory mollusks that resembled squid. Cephalopoda class of fossils. They lived during the periods of Earth history known as the Jurassic and Cretaceous. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells. They are more closely related to a living octopus, though the shells resemble that of a nautilus. Ammonites first appearing in the fossil record 240 million years ago, descending from straight shelled cephalopods. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
An Ammonite shell is essentially crystal, it grew this by secreting a specialised protein called conchiolin which provides the structure to nucleate the crystals. They then secrete ions to activate the formation of calcium carbonate crystals and tailor the environment with pressure or other means to form Aragonite instead of Calcite. Due to the presence of these crystalline structures, fossilised specimens can display stunning crystals of Calcite and Aragonite within the chambers.
Incited by their spiral shape, the name Ammonite is a derivative of ammonis cornua meaning horns of Ammon an ancient reference to the Egyptian God Amun-Ra / Ammon. Known as the horned God, he was historically depicted adorned with Ram’s horns upon his head.
Fossils have been used metaphysically to bring harmony, accessing knowledge of past lives, and clearing karma. Full of the energy of the Cosmos, its appearance helps us to remember this Spiral journey and that all things change form and that although fossilised, the energy is unspoken, its a connection with all life and accessed via your energy connection with it to become one.
