Mineralogy & Crystallography Kyanite
Kyanite Crystal System is Triclinic.
Atoms formed three axes, all of them are unequal in length, none of them are right angles to each other. Its shape is three dimensional like a cube, but it has been skewed or inclined to one side making it oblique. All crystal faces are parallel to each other.
Its crystal habit is columnar; fibrous; bladed.
The kyanite structure can be visualised as a distorted face centered cubic lattice of oxygen ions, with aluminium ions occupying 40% of the octahedral sites and silicon occupying 10% of the tetrahedral sites. The aluminium octahedra form chains along the length of the crystal, half of which are straight and half of which are zigzag, with silica tetrahedra linking the chains together. There is no direct linkage between silica tetraheda, making kyanite a member of the nesosilicate class of silicate minerals.
Mineralogy & Crystallography Obsidian
Obsidian is classified as Amorphous because it has no orderly internal atomic structure and no naturally occurring shape,due to its formation from the parent which is a Volcano. Obsidian is produced from felsic lava, rich in the lighter elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, and potassium. It is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows. These flows have a high content of silica, giving them a high viscosity. The high viscosity inhibits diffusion of atoms through the lava, which inhibits the first step (nucleation) in the formation of mineral crystals. Together with rapid cooling, this results in a natural glass forming from the lava.
Rainbow Obsidian is greenish, pink black coloured Obsidian that reflects a subtle coloured sheen on its surface as a result of gas bubbles being trapped in between its layers as the molten lava began to cool while the Obsidian was forming. These trapped bubbles produce gorgeous effects such as Golden sheen, Silver sheen and sheen varieties of Obsidian.
