In Astrology, Cancer rules House 4 on the Zodiac wheel journey of 12 houses. It is the house of the Mother archetype experience (some Astrologers say this is the house of the Father archetype - really its the 'roles' played by the energies rather than gender though gender only is relevant in the matrix of Society as a construct/convention). It is home, safety and security and is signified by the Crab whose home is a shell. It is the first water element. Ruled by the Moon, Cancer is as changeable as Gemini though emotionally and moods are very prominent for them.
 
 
Cancer is the most rawest sensitive energy because after Gemini, emotions can't be escaped from, emotions are felt and in great abundance. It is here the Cancerian is forced to identify as an emotional being who experiences fears of loss and understand what is needed to survive, understand what family, community and preservation is and guard everything they are attached to with everything they have. Cancer has a mind like a filing cabinet and never, ever forgets how something or someone made them feel (Scorpio's roots) and forgiveness is to be learned ... 
Cancer may act tough on the outside, however inside are completely soft and pure of heart.
 
 
Crying is a part of life for Cancer. Their tears remind us of what is sacred in this life. These people are not affected by jealousy initially and they can have problems saying no to those they love which means manipulation, their hearts are so  big, its later after memories of betrayals where Scorpio experiences it. 
 

A true homebody, Cancer is the epitome of nurturing in all forms. Cancer will fight to protect and preserve and are excellent organisers, being a Cardinal sign.
